As always, you should be able to hover over the German and see an English translation.}

There was very little that past by the perceptive aeniama's eyes, and his uncanny ability to read microexpressions, even to an extent, made this particular task even harder. He could tell that something was bothering the other, and even though it was obvious that Fahne didn't want it to be seen, it wasn't something Domino could simply easily let go. But at the same time, he didn't want to make the black fox uncomfortable, so he decided to simply make him spill it himself.

"Something on your mind?" he asked, about as casually as possible, tail flickering idly.

Fahne tensed slightly, knowing his plan had failed. He did not want to lie, not to Domino. He did not want to hurt him either...

Opening his eyes, he gave a small smile. "Just thinking about the upper levels." he said nonchalantly. Though his voice seemed normal enough, the smoke aeniama was avoiding eye contact. His gaze was downward at the floor, nervously moving back and forth.

"Fahne." His voice was stern, tails flickering without the slightest amusement. He turned his icy gaze onto the smoke aeniama with a frown. "Something's bothering you. And your hiding it from me." His gaze softened and he licked the other's nose. "I'd rather have it off your shoulders than it weighing you down. And it may or may not have to do with the upper levels."

The black fox shrunk and his tails faded to nothing at Domino's tone. Ashamed of his cowardice, guilt gripped his heart. "I'm sorry..." he whispered.

His eyes became wet as he lifted them to look at Domino and said, "I'm scared, Domino. Everyone talks about how great it will be to get out of the Sewers, but I'm not so sure... What if something bad happens? What if the humans-"

His voice cracked.

His eyes squeezed shut in a vain attempt to keep his tears in, yet did the opposite. Little patters could be heard as the drops fell from his face. "I- I don't want to- lose anyone. I don't- want-" Fahne sniffed loudly between sobs. He was a total mess...

Domino, like a short and brief flash of light, managed to get closer and more or less drag Fahne into an embrace in one fell swoop, circling his paws around his beloved smoke spirit. "That's always a certain fear," he whispered softly, setting his head atop Fahne's own, "of what we don't know about, of what we could lose. It's not just you. I'm terrified of leaving the Sewers for the Slums," he admitted softly, both tails flickering nervously. "I'm terrified of what's up there, of all the new danger, of losing Mao, Xel...you..."

The ice spirit sighed softly, chilled breath coming out in soft puffs. He gently wiped away the other's tears with his paw gently, leaning their forehead together.

"I promise -no, I swear- that I will always be here for you. I'll always protect you. And I can guarantee that there are many others who'll have your back as well. Yeah, it's scary to think of who we could lose, but we made it this long. The will to live and grow is powerful within all of us, even you. And we'll all make it. You'll see." He smiled softly, ice blue eyes warm and caring. He looked at the grates, filtering down their soft light.

"We'll make it. We just have to," he murmured softly, hiding his own insecurity in his tone.

Though normally he would easily be comforted by the soft, caring voice of his cherished friend, tears continued to fall from Fahne's eyes. Despite his attempts to right his breathing, his shoulders shook as he sobbed. He pushed himself tightly against Domino, tails curling around them. "H-how can you be so sure?" he whimpered. "There are humans up there! They could kill us all if they wanted!"

Hopeless paranoia and panic filled the small spirit. He looked at Domino with desperation. "I don't want anyone to get hurt protecting me. Especially you- Never you!" More tears poured down his cheeks as Fahne's face crumpled in pure sorrow. He wrapped his forepaws around the ice spirit and gripped him. "I don't know what I'd do if you were gone- I can't stand it- I feel like there's something crushing in my chest just thinking about it!"

Burying his face in Domino's neck as he'd so done many times before, he cried, "You are so special to me. I-I'd spend my whole life down here if it meant I could be with you forever..."

A soft whine escaped Domino at the failed attempt to comfort his friend, and he leaned himself to become a soft of cover over the other fox spirit. "I-I don't know," he admittedly whispered. "I can't be sure. I don't know what's up there. And I don't know if I can protect us from it." He sighed, ears lying back, just the mere thought defeating him.

He pressed his nose into Fahne's familiar ebony fur, clashing with his silver. "The same goes here for me. If I lost you....I'd lose a piece of myself," he said in a broken whisper. "You mean the stars to me..." He said softly. "I won't let anything in this world hurt you.

"But these Sewers- they're only meant for our rearing. We're going to grow too! We have to..." he said. "I won't let anything hurt you, while I'm still alive," he promised. "I won't let even one human lay their filthy paws on you." He growled softly at the mere thought. But he calmed and began grooming the other to calm him as well. "Ainu will be with us. We'll be ok, Fahne. All of us. But for now, let's focus on right here, right now. We can't control the future. Let's enjoy this, just us, before it ends..." he whispered, nuzzling the ebony fur he loved so dearly.

"Ich liebe dich," he suddenly murmured.

Fahne listened quietly as Domino spoke, still holding tight to him. Occasionally he'd inhale deeply to try to calm himself, but he was still a bit shaky. He wasn't sure how he felt when Domino said the feeling was mutual; he was happy that the other cared for him so much, but at the same time the fact that his friend was frightened saddened Fahne. Still, he decided that they silver fox was the wiser, and that it would best to focus on the present time.

The pitch black aeniama froze. No doubt he'd heard correctly. He loved Domino too. Not in the same way that he loved to hide, or play, or even eat fruit. It was entirely different... Fahne nuzzled his snout beneath the other's chin and licked him softly, as well as at the corner of his mouth and whispered. "Ich liebe dich auch, mein Schätzchen..."

Domino went red, with seemed to stained his otherwise darker silver fur. But he smiled and nuzzled the black fox lovingly, making a sound akin to purring. He wasn't sure how the language just slipped out, but he was glad it did- it was one that Fahne knew and spoke. But the words were powerful, and that one word- love - summed up how he felt about the smoke spirit. Could he imagine a world without Fahne? The though ripped at him and he quickly abandoned it. He wouldn't allow the world to take Fahne, or anyone else, from him. He would protect those he loved. With all the ice and wits he had.

Fahne cuddled his companion gently and warmly in return, a soft chirp-like sound escaping his throat. He'd never heard anyone speak that language before, other than himself of course. The other spirits seemed to understand him just fine when he slipped into it, yet always replied in the common tongue. He wasn't sure exactly what that meant, or if it really mattered at all, but it seemed to be special when Domino spoke it just now. Surely he was able to speak it because of their strong bond. That had to be it. The thought only made the ebony fox happier.

I need to think of all the good things, and not so much about the bad, he thought. Although his life was new, he had already experienced great happiness. There were so many others in the sewers just like him, yet all unique. Numerous playmates, kits to explore with, Elders to learn from, beads, artifacts, and kros energy to find... this is what made up his world. While he was still terrified at the thought of change, the uncertainty of a new city Level, Fahne knew they had to press on, all of them, together.

As long as his treasured silver fox was with him, everything would be okay.

You said you'd always be here for me.
You said you'd never let anyone hurt me.
You said we'd all be okay-
You promised we'd make it- together!!

So why aren't you here?
